This magic that Blackburn is searching for is universal. It can come from indecipherable calligraphic marks, from a sublime vista, from a leaf floating down a stream. He samples from soaring American skylines, Australian desert plains, windswept Yorkshire hills and sunny seaside resorts, but when it comes to producing the drawing, the origin of the motif doesn’t matter. For Blackburn is not interested in recording the landscape topographically. The landscape is his tool with which to unlock his inner world.
